Known for their beautiful color and soothing scent, lilacs (syringa vulgaris) are a flowering plant with visual and aromatic appeal. However, in addition to these pleasing aesthetic qualities, we include lilacs in our Activating Serum for their ability to reduce inflammation, protect against harmful environmental and physiological stressors, and promote the regeneration of dormant hair follicles that have stopped producing hair growth.
Lilacs grow on flowering bushes that can reach 30 feet high and live for 40 years. For centuries, the flowers have been used in aromatherapy and medicine to soothe a variety of ailments. As an essential oil, lilacs are purifying and soothing, promoting focus and relaxation. In ancient medicine, they were used to treat parasites, malaria, and fevers. Although these practices have been discontinued, modern herbalists use lilac oil primarily in the treatment of skin ailments like rashes, sun damage, abrasions, and even hair loss.
Our Activating Serum uses lilac stem cells to enhance hair growth. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells—unique cells that are able to become specialized cells or to divide to produce new stem cells. Hair follicles are made up of stem cells that are present in the skin and help produce hair. These cells are unique because they are typically inactive or “quiescent” until quickly activated during a new hair cycle. When these cells don’t activate, hair doesn’t grow. Research has shown that plant stem cells promote the activation of hair follicles and may prolong their lifespan.
While it may seem counterintuitive to use plant stem cells on a human head, there are real benefits to doing so that won’t result in you sprouting flowers from your scalp. Human stem cells have gained popularity in modern medicine for their ability to heal injuries and even grow new organs. However, human stem cells must be extracted from humans, making them difficult and expensive to obtain. Fortunately, plants also have undifferentiated cells that are useful not only for tissue repair but also for generating new organisms (like when you cut a branch or bud off a plant, and a new one grows). Plant stem cells are able to reactivate other cells, synthesize collagen, and stimulate skin regeneration, resulting in a healthier scalp.
Lilac stem cells are particularly powerful because of their verbascosides, an active component that makes lilac leaf particularly effective in the treatment of common skin ailments like inflammation, acne, aging, and hyperpigmentation. Verbascosides are powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, which experts consider to be stronger than hydrocortisone and triamcinolone. They are also effective in the treatment of wounds and the protection against environmental stressors like UVA and UVB, repairing and adding shine to damaged strands.
Rich in verbascosides, our lilac stem cells are the plant cells every scalp needs. They activate dormant hair follicles, repair strand damage, reduce scalp irritation, and stimulate energy at the root for healthier, shinier hair. Looking forward to adding lilac to your scalp routine? We’d love to know your questions about and experience with this versatile flower.
